D27 Series (2026 – current)

The Nissan D27 Navara was officially revealed on 19 November 2025 and launched in Australia in March 2026, replacing the D23 generation that had been sold locally since 2015. Its arrival was particularly significant because 2026 marked 40 years of the Navara nameplate in Australia, dating back to the original D21 Navara introduced in Australia in December 1986.

The D27 represented one of the biggest changes in the Navara’s Australian history. Rather than being developed on a completely independent Nissan platform, the new Navara shares its core ladder-frame architecture with the latest-generation Mitsubishi Triton through the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Nissan nevertheless gave the D27 its own styling, equipment, chassis tuning and model positioning.

A major focus of the Australian D27 development program was local suspension tuning. Nissan again partnered with Australian engineering specialist Premcar, which tested and developed the suspension specifically for Australian roads, loads and driving conditions. More than 18,000km of local testing was undertaken across conditions ranging from Outback roads to urban driving, towing and heavy-load use.

Unlike the outgoing D23’s 2.3-litre diesel engine, the Australian D27 uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder bi-turbo diesel, producing 150kW and 470Nm. It is paired exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission in the Australian launch range. Maximum braked towing capacity remains at 3,500kg.

At launch, Nissan simplified the Australian Navara range considerably. The D27 was introduced exclusively as a Dual Cab 4×4 automatic, available in four grades:

• SL
• ST
• ST-X
• PRO-4X

The ST-X and PRO-4X also introduced Nissan’s more advanced Super 4WD system and terrain-selection technology, while the PRO-4X continued as the flagship factory off-road model.

Visually, the D27 brought a much more angular and upright design than the D23. Nissan incorporated styling references to earlier Navaras, including the distinctive three-slot treatment above the grille inspired by the D21 Navara, linking the newest generation with the model that originally established the Navara name in Australia.

The D27 also continued Australia’s strong connection with the Warrior program. Nissan and Premcar unveiled a D27 PRO-4X Warrior concept alongside the new Navara in November 2025, previewing the next generation of locally developed high-performance Navaras. The Warrior program itself began with the D23 N-TREK Warrior in 2019 and had delivered more than 12,750 locally remanufactured vehicles by 2025.

By the time the D27 arrived, more than 425,000 Navaras had been sold in Australia since 1986. The D27 therefore represents not simply a replacement for the D23, but the beginning of the fifth generation of a ute that has become a long-standing part of Australia’s work, towing, touring and four-wheel-drive market.

It is important not to group the D27 together with the earlier NP300/D23, as the new generation features major changes to its chassis, drivetrain, suspension, body and many mechanical components.
